Bach thought nothing of borrowing from himself or other composers, as music at this time was not viewed as intellectual property. We might think of Beethoven, for example, as receiving music from God (and he frequently spoke of his art in such terms) and protecting his work jealously; for Bach, music was more of a human offering to God, given freely. That's nothing against Beethoven or the Romantics--it's just a comparison of two different times, two different aesthetics and ethics of artistry.
